In its raw form, the THCA molecule has an extra carboxyl group (-COOH), which prevents it from binding effectively to the cannabinoid receptors in the brain. When exposed to sufficient heat—through smoking, vaping, or baking—this carboxyl group is released from the molecule as carbon dioxide (CO2​). This chemical change alters the molecule's structure, transforming it into Delta-9 THC, which is then able to interact with the body's endocannabinoid system to produce the characteristic intoxicating effects. It is considered federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill because, in its raw state, its Delta-9 THC content remains below the legal limit of 0.3% by dry weight.
